Vietnam is preparing to phase out its 3G networks by September 2028, following the global trend of moving away from older technologies to prioritize advanced 4G and 5G services. This strategic transition is aimed at enhancing the country’s telecommunications infrastructure and aligning with the technological advancements that are reshaping mobile communications worldwide.
Transition to 4G and 5G
The move to decommission 3G networks is part of a larger plan to modernize Vietnam’s telecommunications landscape. Major telecom operators in the country, including Viettel, VinaPhone, and MobiFone, have been actively involved in this transition.
- Viettel: Viettel began shutting down its 3G services as early as 2022, completing the process by the first quarter of 2023. According to Nguyen Van Son, Director of Viettel Telecom’s Mobile Center, the company has nearly eliminated all 3G subscribers, with only a few remaining hotspots.
- VinaPhone and MobiFone: Both companies will phase out 3G services in areas where subscribers or traffic are low. However, they will maintain 3G networks in areas where there are still users or devices that rely on 3G or non-VoLTE-enabled 4G services.
Phasing out 2G and 3G
In addition to the 3G shutdown, the Vietnamese government is also planning to phase out 2G services. Nguyen Phong Nha, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Telecommunications Authority, emphasized the importance of gradually transitioning users from 2G to 4G and 5G networks. This two-stage phase-out will allow telecom operators to reallocate resources and invest in next-generation technologies, ensuring a seamless transition for consumers.
The decision to extend the phase-out period until 2028 reflects the government’s intent to minimize disruptions to users. By allowing a gradual transition, telecom operators will have the time to optimize their networks and assist customers in upgrading their devices. This phased approach is critical to ensuring that all users can smoothly transition to 4G and 5G services.
