Vietnam: 2G Shutdown Delayed to Recover from Storm Yagi

In response to the significant damage caused by Storm Yagi, Vietnam’s Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) has postponed the planned 2G network shutdown. Originally set for September 15, 2024, the shutdown has been moved to October 15, 2024. This extension, detailed in Circular No. 10/2024/TT-BTTTT, was issued to give businesses and residents additional time to restore services and manage the storm’s effects on telecommunications infrastructure.

Impact of Storm Yagi on Telecom Services

Storm Yagi inflicted substantial damage on Vietnam’s telecom infrastructure, disrupting communication services nationwide. The postponement of the 2G shutdown provides a necessary buffer for both operators and subscribers affected by these disruptions. Minister Nguyen Manh Hung signed the circular, acknowledging the need for more time to repair and transition following the storm’s destruction.

Current Status of 2G Users

By September 8, 2024, the number of 2G-only users in Vietnam had dropped to 3.4 million, a notable decrease from previous months. This reduction is part of the ongoing efforts by mobile operators, under the guidance of the MIC, to move subscribers onto more modern 4G networks. However, challenges persist, particularly in ensuring the availability of affordable 4G feature phones for the remaining users.

Stakeholder Efforts to Ensure a Smooth Transition

In a roundtable discussion hosted by VietNamNet and the Telecommunications Department, key stakeholders from the telecom, retail, and manufacturing sectors reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that all remaining 2G users can successfully transition to 4G by the new shutdown date. This coordinated effort is aimed at minimizing any service disruptions as the country phases out its aging 2G infrastructure.
