The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) has announced updated technical standards for Short Range Devices (SRDs), effective June 2024.
These updates impact a wide variety of products, such as automotive equipment, data networking devices, telecom/terminal equipment, consumer electronics, and broadcasting devices. Key highlights include new frequency allocations and enhanced technical specifications that align with international standards like EN 300 220, EN 300 328, EN 301 893, CISPR 32, IEC/EN 60950-1, IEC/EN 62368-1, and IEC 63000.
The updated standards introduce Wi-Fi 6 technology into the Tanzanian market, supporting faster data transmission and improved device performance in congested environments. Additionally, there is new authorization for Short Range Radar (SRR) equipment to operate in the 77 GHz to 81 GHz band, providing enhanced opportunities for automotive applications like advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and smart infrastructure.
A new frequency band (870-874.4 MHz) has been designated for tracking, tracing, and data acquisition, which is expected to boost the performance of IoT devices and improve monitoring and data collection across various sectors. These changes represent a significant step in aligning Tanzania’s SRD standards with global advancements in technology.
