The Syrian Telecommunications and Post Regulatory Authority (SY-TPRA) has issued a circular prohibiting the import of telecommunications equipment that operates on mobile networks unless it supports 4G/LTE or later generations. Devices that operate only on 2G networks, 3G networks, or both will be gradually phased out of service over a period to be announced by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. SY-TPRA will not grant import approvals for these 2G and 3G only devices after October 1, 2026. Importers are asked to take note and stop importing mobile equipment that does not support 4G/LTE.
Scope of the 4G/LTE Import Requirement
The circular applies to all telecommunications equipment that operates within mobile phone networks. Under the new requirement:
- Affected devices: Equipment that operates only on 2G networks, only on 3G networks, or on both.
- Minimum requirement: Mobile equipment must support 4G/LTE or later generations to be imported into Syria.
- Import approvals: SY-TPRA will not issue import approvals for 2G and 3G only devices after October 1, 2026.
Phase Out of 2G and 3G Only Devices
SY-TPRA says the measure is intended to keep pace with technological advancements and make sure the public benefits fully from mobile networks. Devices that work only on 2G or 3G networks will be gradually removed from service. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology will announce the timeline for this phase out separately.
What Importers and Manufacturers Should Know
- Check network support: Confirm that any mobile device or equipment intended for Syria supports 4G/LTE or later before applying for import approval.
- Plan for the deadline: Import approvals for 2G and 3G only equipment are no longer available from October 1, 2026.
- Watch for the phase out timeline: Further announcements from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology will set the dates for removing 2G and 3G only devices from service.
