Saudi Arabia’s Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) and the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) have announced that starting January 1, 2025, the first phase of a new regulation requiring USB Type-C as the unified charging port will take effect. This initiative aims to standardize charging ports for mobile phones and electronic devices.
Regulation Goals and Benefits
The unified charging port decision is driven by several key objectives:
- Improved User Experience: Standardizing charging ports will simplify charging solutions for consumers and provide consistent high-quality charging and data transfer technology.
- Cost Savings for Consumers: Reduced need for multiple types of chargers will decrease consumer spending by over 170 million SAR annually.
- Environmental Sustainability: The initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia’s sustainability goals by reducing electronic waste by approximately 15 tons per year and cutting local consumption of chargers by more than 2.2 million units annually.
- Support for SDGs: This policy contributes to the Kingdom’s efforts to meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by promoting environmental and economic sustainability in the tech sector.
Phased Implementation Timeline
The new regulation will roll out in two phases:
- Phase One (Effective January 1, 2025): This stage will cover a wide range of devices, including:
- Mobile phones
- Tablets
- Digital cameras
- E-readers
- Portable video game consoles
- Headphones and earphones
- Portable speakers
- Amplified speakers
- Keyboards and computer mice
- Portable navigation systems
- Wireless routers
- Phase Two (Effective April 1, 2026): This phase will expand the regulation to include laptops.
Compliance Requirements
Manufacturers and suppliers must adopt USB Type-C as the standard charging port type in accordance with technical and administrative requirements specified in relevant technical regulations and standards. These measures ensure a smooth transition for businesses and provide clarity for consumers.
