The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has introduced a new framework for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) and Wireless Area Services (WAS) following extensive consultations. The framework, which governs unlicensed frequency bands for WLAN, aims to enhance spectrum utilization and ensure the smooth coexistence of services without harmful interference.
Objectives of the WLAN Framework
The PTA’s newly published framework focuses on several important objectives:
- Supporting New Services: Encourages the introduction of innovative wireless services and improved spectrum use, benefiting the entire country.
- Regulatory Guidelines: Establishes clear guidelines for frequency bands allocated to WLAN technologies, providing regulatory clarity for manufacturers and service providers.
- Secondary Use of Frequency Bands: Ensures that WLAN equipment operates on a secondary basis and does not interfere with primary services.
- Shared Spectrum Utilization: Promotes the efficient use of spectrum with specific technical conditions to support coexistence between services.
Key Frequency Bands for WLAN Usage
The PTA has designated the following unlicensed frequency bands for WLAN and Wireless Area Services:
- 2.4 GHz
- 5 GHz
- 6 GHz (announced for unlicensed use in May 2024)
These frequency bands are expected to boost wireless coverage and improve connectivity in homes, businesses, and public spaces, fostering wider adoption of digital technologies.
