On November 28, 2024, Mexico’s General Congress approved a decree to dissolve the Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones (IFETEL), the country’s telecommunications regulator, and replace it with the Agencia de Transformación Digital y Telecomunicaciones (Agency for Digital Transformation and Telecommunications).
Transition and Responsibilities of the New Agency
The new Agency will officially begin operations on January 1, 2025, with resources transferred from IFETEL by December 31, 2024. The Agency’s responsibilities will cover a wide range of areas related to digital inclusion, telecommunications, and national security. Some key responsibilities include:
- Formulating and leading policies related to digital inclusion, digital government, and communications for the Federal Public Administration.
- Developing and managing the Federal Government’s telecommunications and broadcasting policies.
- Defining satellite capacity for national security and social services, ensuring efficient use of satellite resources.
- Regulating, inspecting, and monitoring public postal, telegraph, and other communication services provided by the Federal Government.
- Establishing protocols for information and communications security within the Federal Administration.
- Leading the national policy on technological sovereignty and promoting technological solutions for the digitalization of public services.
- Issuing provisions related to the acquisition, leasing, and provision of ICT services.
Additionally, the Agency will take part in international forums related to its areas of competence, propose international agreements on technology and telecommunications, and oversee regulatory improvements within the Federal Public Administration.
