The Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) has approved the classification of the 64–71 GHz frequency band as free spectrum, adding to the previously classified 57–64 GHz band. This decision provides an additional 7 GHz of contiguous free spectrum, supporting new technologies and devices without requiring concessions or authorization.
Important Benefits and Applications
This expanded spectrum enables innovative uses and promotes regional harmonization in line with international best practices. Key applications include:
- Smart Devices: Motion sensors and fixed field disturbance sensors for wireless communication, which can improve accessibility for individuals with disabilities.
- High-Capacity Communication: Radio links between fixed stations with high data transmission rates.
- Emerging Technologies: Wi-Gig systems, wearables, and devices for virtual and augmented reality.
Driving Technological Advancement
The Technical Committee on Radioelectric Spectrum (CTER) played a critical role in identifying the need for this free spectrum classification. By integrating the 64–71 GHz band into the existing 57–64 GHz band, the IFT maximizes the efficiency of the radio spectrum and expands opportunities for technological innovation in telecommunications across Mexico.
