India: New Conformity Standards for Telecom Equipment Announced

Home / Country Update / India: New Conformity Standards for Telecom Equipment Announced

The Ministry of Communications, through the Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC), has introduced new standards and conformity assessment measures for telecom equipment in India. Published under Notification S.O. 982(E) on February 25, 2025, these regulations establish stricter compliance requirements under the Telecommunications Act, 2023.

Mandatory Compliance for Telecom Equipment

The notification mandates that all specified telecom equipment must comply with the Essential Requirements (ERs) set by the Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC). These standards, outlined in an annexed schedule, will become enforceable 180 days after the notification date.

Once in effect, the regulation will prohibit the import, sale, distribution, or use of listed telecom equipment unless it meets the Mandatory Testing and Certification of Telecom Equipment (MTCTE) requirements. The National Centre for Communication Security (NCCS) will also play a role in defining applicable standards, ensuring alignment with evolving security and performance benchmarks.
