India: Extension for Stakeholder Comments on Draft ITSAR for Open RAN (O-RAN) of 5G

The Indian government has further extended the deadline for receiving stakeholder comments on the Draft for Comments (DFC) of the Indian Telecom Security Assurance Requirements (ITSAR) for the Radio Intelligent Controller (RIC) of 5G Open RAN (O-RAN) until February 15, 2025.

Background of the Draft ITSAR Document

Central Government, under the powers of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, has notified new rules, through amendments to the Indian Telegraph Rules, 1951, making it compulsory to conduct testing and obtain certification for all telecom equipment. These amendments that have been made effective through Rule 528 to 537 in Part XI are meant to ensure that equipment is fit for service and also compliant with things like security standards.

The National Centre for Communication Security (NCCS) is the agency that is charged with the development and certification of the security requirements for telecom equipment. This is why the ITSAR for RIC of 5G Open RAN is an important document in this process, defining the security assurance requirements for 5G technologies.

Stakeholder Participation

The government has conducted an online meeting to interact with the stakeholders including Telecom Service Providers (TSPs), M2M service providers, Application service providers, Device manufacturers, OEMs, Prospective labs, Industry bodies and Academia. In this meeting, the stakeholders will get a chance to ask questions and provide their feedback and suggestions on the draft document.

Stakeholders can send their comments to the following email addresses:
