China: MIIT Abolishes Regulations on 40–50 GHz Wireless Access Systems

Home / Country Update / China: MIIT Abolishes Regulations on 40–50 GHz Wireless Access Systems

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of China has issued a formal notice abolishing two regulatory documents related to the use of the 40–50 GHz frequency band. This decision is part of the country’s effort to modernize radio spectrum management and improve the overall efficiency of spectrum utilization. Effective January 1, 2026, regulatory support for both fixed and mobile wireless access systems operating within this band will be officially withdrawn.

Scope of the Cancellation

The two repealed documents include:

  • Guidelines for the use of point-to-point wireless access systems in fixed services within the 40–50 GHz band (originally issued in 2013).
  • Guidelines for broadband wireless access systems in mobile services within the same band (also issued in 2013).

From the implementation date, radio management agencies will stop processing new applications related to these systems.

Impact on Existing Stations

While new licenses will no longer be issued, existing radio stations that were legally established under the previous framework can continue operating. These systems may remain in use until they are naturally decommissioned or phased out.

The decision to retire these older regulations reflects China’s broader focus on increasing spectrum efficiency, encouraging more modern, high-quality radio communication technologies and aligning national frequency usage policies with current industry demands and development trends.
