Brazil: Expansion of the 3.5 GHz Band for 5G

Beginning September 2, 2024, Anatel will allow 194 additional municipalities to license and activate 5G stations in the 3.5 GHz band. This expansion, part of the Monitoring Group for the Implementation of Solutions for Interference Problems (Gaispi), brings the total number of municipalities with 5G capabilities to 5,002, covering over 94.5% of the population.

Key Regulatory and Rollout Steps

The rollout process includes essential steps to ensure smooth deployment:

  • Clearing Satellite Bands: The transition of free open television signals from the C band to the Ku band is mandatory to vacate the 3.5 GHz spectrum.
  • Interference Mitigation: FSS stations are being equipped with filters to minimize interference with 5G frequencies.
  • Provider Planning: While the 3.5 GHz band is released, the actual installation of 5G networks is dependent on each provider’s individual rollout plan.
  • Regional Focus: States like Mato Grosso, Pará, and Piauí now have all municipalities authorized for 5G station activation.

Public Guidelines and Equipment Adaptation

Residents relying on satellite dishes for open TV must update their equipment to avoid interference. Those registered in CadÚnico can request free equipment kits from the Siga Antenado program, with over 3.5 million kits distributed to date. The full list of authorized municipalities and certified 5G devices is available on Anatel’s data panel.
