Brazil: Completion of 3.5 GHz Band Cleanup Enabling Nationwide 5G

The Brazilian National Telecommunications Agency (ANATEL) and the Band Management Entity (EAF) have completed the 3.5 GHz band cleanup across all cities in Brazil, 14 months ahead of schedule. This milestone, originally planned for 2026, is a critical step in enabling 5G networks nationwide, bringing faster connectivity to urban and rural areas. While the cleanup doesn’t guarantee immediate 5G installation in all areas, it lays the groundwork for service expansion based on individual providers’ plans.

Obligations from the 5G Auction

The cleanup stems from the obligations set forth in the 2021 5G Auction. Winning operators, including Claro, TIM, and Vivo, collaborated to establish the EAF, which handled:

  • Clearing the 3.5 GHz band.
  • Building six digital highways in the Amazon riverbed.
  • Implementing secure networks for the Federal Government.

Dual Focus on Interference Mitigation and Satellite Migration

Efforts to free the 3.5 GHz band involved two key operations:

  1. Interference Mitigation: Decommissioning 1,482 satellite stations in the Extended C Band and addressing interference in over 19,000 locations.
  2. TVRO Migration: Transitioning from C Band to Ku Band for TV signals, with 4.3 million free digital satellite dish kits distributed to low-income families as part of the Federal Government’s social programs.

As of now, 770 municipalities have operational 5G networks, serving 35 million people with an average speed of over 300 Mbps. Up-to-date information on 5G coverage, certified devices, and stations is available on Anatel’s data dashboards.
