Brazil: Anatel Reinforces Safety Certification Standards for Products

As Black Friday approaches, Anatel is increasing efforts to educate consumers on the dangers of purchasing uncertified telecommunications equipment, both online and in stores. Non-approved products can pose safety risks, including electrical hazards, and compromise the quality of Brazil’s telecommunications networks.

Certification and Safety Standards

Anatel requires rigorous testing of all telecommunications products to ensure compliance with national safety standards. Certified products receive the Anatel Seal, indicating they withstand electrical variations, prevent leaks of toxic materials and overheating and avoid interference with nearby devices.

Failure to comply with these standards can result in administrative penalties or criminal charges.

Counterfeit Chargers Risk

Counterfeit cell phone chargers are among the most dangerous uncertified products. Without adequate safety mechanisms, these chargers can cause overheating, device damage, and even electrical shocks or fires.

Certified chargers, marked with the Anatel Seal, undergo tests for material durability, electromagnetic compatibility, and electrical safety. Consumers are encouraged to verify this seal before making a purchase.

Strengthened E-commerce Safeguards

To protect consumers buying cell phones online, Anatel has enforced strict measures for e-commerce platforms:

  • Approval Code Verification: Sellers must provide the certification code in product listings.
  • Database Cross-Checking: Platforms must validate approval codes against Anatel’s records.
  • Ad Removal: Non-compliant listings are to be promptly removed.

Counterfeit devices often mimic authentic products, even providing fake invoices to mislead buyers. Consumers are urged to follow these guidelines to ensure they purchase genuine, certified equipment.
