Bhutan: BICMA Launches Online Licensing System for 5G Spectrum

As the demand for mobile broadband services in Bhutan grows, the Bhutan InfoComm and Media Authority (BICMA) has made a significant announcement.

On February 20, 2024, BICMA published the 26GHz Band Plan, allocating the n258 band (24.3 – 27.5 GHz) for IMT services. To address Quality of Service (QoS) challenges and limited land space, telecom operators are deploying mid-band 3.5GHz (n78) for 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) networks, with plans for further spectrum expansion. This initiative aims to enhance mobile broadband capacity and meet the increasing subscriber demands.

Global regulators are also focusing on mid-band 3.5GHz, 700MHz, and mmWave bands, indicating opportunities for Bhutan’s mobile broadband sector. The n258 band is seen as a key enabler for 5G deployment, necessitating careful planning of frequency assignments and limitations.
