Andorra Telecom has announced the gradual shutdown of its 3G network beginning in October 2026. This move is part of a broader technological evolution, as 3G is being replaced globally by more advanced 4G and 5G technologies. After more than two decades in service, the 3G network has reached the end of its lifecycle, prompting Andorra Telecom to optimize both the efficiency of existing 4G and 5G networks and overall energy consumption.
Impact on Customers and Devices
Currently, the majority of Andorra Telecom customers already use devices that are compatible with 4G or 5G, ensuring that most users will experience no service disruptions. However, there are approximately 1,500 devices that support only 2G and 3G. For these users, after the shutdown, the devices will still function but will be limited to the slower 2G network.
To avoid disruptions, Andorra Telecom encourages customers to upgrade to 4G or 5G-capable devices and recommends reviewing device settings to ensure they are not locked to 3G. This proactive approach will help maintain connectivity as the transition takes place.
Although a shutdown date for the 2G network has not yet been set, Andorra Telecom indicates that the eventual phasing out of 2G is part of long-term modernization plans. Customers can expect continuous support during this transition, including technical assistance to help them adapt to newer technologies.
